Jessica England and Melody Niemann, the artists of Wood+Twine, were both born and bred in the good city of Louisville, KY. Both hold a BSBA in Marketing from the University of Louisville and work full-time at local ad agencies in addition to running their craft venture. Jessica and Melody share an immense affection for small dogs and an obsession with tiny objects. They cannot keep plants alive, but can consume a whole season of Grey’s Anatomy in one sitting.
People ask what the secret ingredient is to W+T artwork. Their answer: wine. And patience. And thick skin… literally. They both enjoy a good book and a good latte, preferably at the same time. Jess and Mel place importance on supporting the local art community as well as using raw materials in their artwork. With these ideals in mind Wood+Twine was born in June 2015.
“Our artwork takes a very unique approach to utilizing raw materials. Using wood, nails and twine, we are able to create distinct pieces with an unprocessed and rustic, yet simple feel. Our work is very accessible to all, available in a variety of sizes and designs. And no two pieces are exactly the same, making each a on-of-a-kind staple for the home. We feel that it is important to represent Louisville and its distinct culture in our artwork. This can be seen in pieces such as Kentucky, Louisville Skyline and Fleur de Lis. Our participation in the Louisville art scene, such as the Flea off Market, Deck the Walls, Cuteopia!, and local charity events, exemplifies the importance we place on giving back to the city that raised us.”
Block Party Handmade Boutique’s ‘Artist of the Month’ program features local and regional artists to help empower handmade makers and small businesses. The rotating exhibitions keep something new and fresh in the store while also showcasing more artists to the community, furthering Block Party’s mission.
